A few Q`s!

Edit By:Parenting Tips
Q:

Hi there!  I'm due in 16 days andplanning to give birth in the living room cos it's the biggest room in our house.   I have 2 plastic sheets from B&Q, 6 towels (but I think I'll need a few more!) an old manky duvet cos the only way I can get comfy is scrunching one up & lying on it & my faux leather bean cube for kneeling on.  I also have DD's space hopper to hand!

The only pain relief I have is entonox but I haven't any in the house due to NHS health & safety rules, so I have my TENS machine at the ready & a wooden spoon to bite.  Both my previous labours have been pretty quick so I'm hoping for a quick one again.

Hiya, Thanks for all your help!

I was thinking downstairs would be best!  But I have huge patio doors and windows that are overlooked so might have to get some thick curtains!  LOL

I might discuss it with thw MW, was thinking just Gas & Air anyway!  Maybe I can keep the option open and decide a little later on!

Thanks

You need old blankets, towels, pool if you want waterbirth and tarpaulin for the floor. They bring everything else themselves. I normally do it downstairs in lounge as its laminate floor but you can do it wherever you want.

Hello its not silly no bugger tells you at midwifes!!! You can have gas n air, codiene based painkillers ie codydramol, some people have pethidine but you cant if you want a water birth. You can transfer to hospital at any time you want if you dont like it. The midwifes should get there on time! At least one anyway, failing that you could always ring an ambulance! Im 100% sure one would be there but its supposed to be two. My labour?was an hour and a half only one midwife came second got there a bit too late! There has to be two at the actual delivery but one for the labour. If you look on the internet its actually much safer to give birth at home and a far more positive experience for mum and baby.

hey hun, i hb with dd and going for a hb this time as wel...

Can I still have pain relief?  What can I have? yes... you can have gas and air and in some areas pethidine is allowed but it is gradually being fased out. that said i had pethidine with ds as well as gas and air. i only used the gas and air for half hour before dd arrived and third time around im going to try it with no pain relief... you'll find ul b a lot more relaxed at home and will nedd less pain relief. ul also progress faster.

What sort of things will I need?  Or is it just hot water & towels?you will need lots of towel... you can never have too many! i bought a load from a charity shop and washed them, i thought they would get stained but i washed them the next day n they were like new. also a cheap plastic decorating sheet from BnQ... 1 for the bed (or whatever you want to labour on) and another for the floor. oh and biscuits and sandwiches for the midwives will go down very well!

What room is best/ can be used?  We have a small bedroom, the kids got the bigger ones! use which ever room u like... i laboured in my front room with a couple of my friends, dh and the mw all talking about me in labour... i moved upstairs to the bedroom half hour b4 i had dd.

Is there a chance the midwife may not arrive?? it depends how quick you labour. at teh end of the day though dont panik... if you really need to call an ambulance and they will talk you through it. my mw was there for the birth and it was trhe 2nd midwife that missed it because i have very quick labours... dd arrived just 14mins after my waters broke at 5cm! talk to your mw... they will quite happily come out when you need them even if its just to examine you... my mw saw me twice b4 i had dd just to check as i didnt want to drag fil over to look after ds and dh home from work for nothing (id been in early labour for 3 weeks)

i hope this reassures u a bit hun... i had an awful hospital birth with ds and would never do it again. with dd i had ehr at hoem and loved it. i would have done it the next day if i could. shes only 6months n im 11 weeks pregnant and will be having another hb... even if its twins! its so much more relaxing at home and ul feel so much more confident.

just make sure u pack a hosp bag just in case

xxx
